NRW board member speaks at Meirionnydd NFU Cymru county meeting

23 December 2020

Mr Davies, who also farms in the county, joined members to give them an update on the current work programme within NRW and provided them with an overview of his role on the board.

During their December county meeting, NFU Cymru members in Meirionnydd welcomed Geraint Davies, board member of Natural Resources Wales (NRW).

Members took the opportunity to raise some issues that were of particular relevance to them which included the significantly reduced activity that could be found within many of the Internal Drainage Districts within the county.  The Dysynni district was highlighted as a particular problem, with channel levels reportedly in excess of one metre above the optimum working level. Similar issues were reported in the Pennal area in relation to the maintenance and safe operation of flood defences.  Their concerns were noted by Mr Davies, who said he would raise them within the organisation.

During the meeting, members also received a policy update on the matters that were of greatest significance at present and county staff were recently congratulated on member performance in the county.

Rhodri Jones, NFU Cymru County Chairman for Meirionnydd, said: “We are most grateful to Geraint for attending the meeting and discussing what are important issues for many of our members.  When it comes to looking after the local area, whether that is the flood defence work, forestry operations or the partnership approach that ensures designated sites are well looked after, we all play our part.

“NRW have significant expectations in terms of their area statements, and we would actively encourage them to engage regularly and meaningfully with the farming industry who are significant land managers within Wales.”
