During the meeting, held at the NFU Cymru office in Llandeilo, members in attendance put forward their own scenarios of what could happen to their farms if the proposed changes around inheritance tax go ahead. Those in attendance also pressed home the importance of sustainable food production, with food being produced to the highest standards, whilst continuing to enhance and care for the environment, needing to be at the top of the government’s agenda.
NFU Cymru Carmarthenshire Vice-County Chairman Haydn Evans said: “I’d like to thank Ann Davies and Cefin Campbell for taking the time to meet with us to discuss this very important issue. It was a very emotional meeting, with members sharing their own family farm stories.
“We made it clear to both Ann and Cefin that the proposed changes to inheritance tax are discriminatory and they fail to encourage the next generation as well as investment, which will have a knock-on effect across the wider economy. This will also impact our ability to produce home-grown food, something which we cannot allow to happen. Confidence really is at an all-time low within the industry and this generational tax is simply not acceptable. We were able to provide numerous reports questioning the Treasury’s figures, including an NFU report, and we hope they will take this back to both the Senedd and Westminster.”
