With spring in full swing and public holidays on the horizon, families and outdoor enthusiasts are expected to head outside to enjoy Wales’ iconic landscapes.
Welsh farming union NFU Cymru is collaborating with the walking charity Ramblers Cymru to remind those headed onto Wales’ footpaths to do so safely and responsibly.
Enjoying the countryside responsibly
- Keep your dog close and under effective control on a short lead around cows and sheep - but release the lead if you are chased by cattle.
- Pick up after your dog and remember to take your litter home with you.
- Leave gates as you find them.
- Follow local signs and keep to marked footpaths and rights of way.
- Do not block access to gateways or driveways when parking.

Landscape enjoyed by millions
NFU Cymru Rural Affairs Board Chairman Hedd Pugh said: “For centuries Welsh farmers have gained a great satisfaction in maintaining and managing this picturesque landscape that is enjoyed by millions of people every year, whether that’s local residents taking advantage of the trails on their doorstep or visitors travelling here from the other side of the world.
“Wales’ countryside is home to thousands of miles of footpaths and rights of way, as well as being a working environment where animals graze and farm businesses work all year round to feed the nation. It is a delicate balance and one where all must act responsibly – whether it’s those enjoying the countryside recreationally or those living and working on the land – to ensure all people and animals remain safe. Spring is a particularly busy time in the farming calendar and visitors will be noticing new-born lambs and calves taking their first steps in the fields. Please be respectful of this environment and the animals that call it home by keeping dogs under control and on a short lead around livestock.
