All Wales Avian Influenza Prevention Zone Introduced

There have been no cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) confirmed in poultry or other kept birds in Wales so far this outbreak season. However, the number of cases in poultry flocks continues to increase across Great Britain and there is a heightened risk of transmission from wild to kept birds. As such an all-Wales Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been introduced under Article 6 of the Avian Influenza and Influenza of Avian Origin in Mammals (Wales) (No. 2) Order 2006.

Heather and Grass Burning – Plan Ahead, Stay in Control, Do it Safely

Burning should be carried out under controlled conditions and within the permitted periods. Burning is only allowed during the following periods:

  • 1 October to 31 March in the uplands
  • 1 November to 15 March elsewhere.

To help you plan ahead, stay in control and do it safely, a Burning Management Plan must be produced and followed for all proposed burns. Plans do not have to be submitted but an up-to-date copy must be available for inspection on request.

The Heather and Grass Burning Code for Wales provides advice on best practice. The Code, along with the Burning Management Plan template, is available on the Welsh Government website at: gov.wales/heather-grass-burning

SAF Digital Assistance

Our regional offices are open to the public strictly by appointment only. If you need additional support, particularly if you are completing the SAF for the first time the Customer Contact Centre can provide telephone support. The Customer Contact Centre can also make a ‘Digital Assistance’ appointment, if necessary, for you to attend a regional office where a member of staff can guide you through the process.
