The NFU Discovery Barn is back on the road for its fifth season. This year it is scheduled to attend 24 events across the country with three locations in Wales.
Helping children understand where their food comes from
It plays an important role promoting our Back British Farming campaign to children under 12 and aims to connect them with the food they eat. It also promotes the work farmers do across the country to produce food and look after the farmed landscape for all to enjoy.
The barn seeks to inspire children to think about farming and provides an engaging way to talk to children about food, where it comes from and how it is produced.
Attracting an urban audience
Getting children excited about farming can help their food education enabling them to be informed and knowledgeable as they grow up.
Experiencing farming through virtual reality
As well as Annabelle the cow, who is always popular, the VR headsets provide a real opportunity for visitors of all ages to experience for real parts of farming.
Lasting impressions are made when children giggle with delight getting licked by a cow, or duck when they see a basket of newly picked apples being tipped on them.
This isn't for real, of course, but it doesn’t feel like that when you have a VR headset on. This has proved a popular addition to the Discovery Barn.
