NFU Cymru strengthens policy team

01 Chwefror 2022

NFU Cymru has strengthened its policy team by welcoming two new members of staff.

Tori Morgan joins the team in a newly created role as National Policy Adviser along with Lowri Morris who has taken up the role of Trainee Policy Adviser.

Both Tori and Lowri have moved from roles elsewhere in the organisation with Tori making the move to Wales from the NFU and Lowri moving to join the policy team from the NFU Cymru support team.

About Tori

Tori, who grew up on a mixed farm on the Welsh Borders, first joined the NFU eight years ago as part of the graduate trainee scheme.  After this, she spent three years working as the Combinable Crops Adviser before moving to join the EU and International Trade team. Tori also completed a six-month secondment working in the British Agriculture Bureau in Brussels which represents 76,000 farmers across the four UK farming unions.

Tori was an active member of Golden Valley YFC and now acts as a club leader. She is a graduate from Cardiff University with a degree in Economics.

Commenting on her appointment, Tori said:

“As National Policy Adviser my role will include having responsibility for our work on dairy, international trade, animal health and welfare, and working with Lowri to support the NFU Cymru Next Generation Group. I am really pleased to have joined NFU Cymru and can’t wait to get stuck in representing and supporting our farming members. I am looking forward to working with members to ensure their voices are heard at the highest level on areas such as dairy contracts, bovine TB and ensuring the next generation of Welsh farmers are supported."

About Lowri

Lowri grew up on her parent’s beef and sheep farm near Builth Wells where they run flocks of Welsh crossbred mule ewes along with her poll dorset flock of sheep. This has increased from one ewe, which Lowri had as a 16th birthday present, to over 50 ewes today.

Having enjoyed being involved in all aspects of farming from a young age, Lowri has been an active member of Aberedw YFC for 15 years and is currently captain of Radnor Ladies Hockey Club.

Alongside a previous job, working part time for the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, Lowri gained a Degree in Business and IT Management through Glyndwr University. After graduating she took on the full-time position of Assistant Livestock Officer before joining the NFU Cymru support team in 2017.

Lowri commented:

“My new role will involve supporting policy and communications work across all sectors. I am currently overseeing recruitment   for the new NFU Cymru Next Generation Group intake and working with them during the next two years. I am also involved with the NFU Student and Young Farmer Ambassador Programme. I am looking forward to continuing to work alongside the NFU Cymru team, gaining experience and broadening my knowledge of the agricultural industry in these unprecedented times.”

Dylan Morgan, NFU Cymru Deputy Director and Head of Policy said: “I am extremely pleased to welcome both Tori and Lowri to the NFU Cymru Policy Team. It is a critical period for Welsh agriculture as we seek to influence legislation and policies that will define Welsh farming for a generation to come, as our trading relationships with the EU and the rest of the World are redefined and we work towards our ambition of ensuring Wales is seen as a world leader in the production of climate friendly food. It is more important than ever to ensure the voice of farmers across Wales is heard loud and clear and further strengthening our team will mean NFU Cymru members have the support and guidance behind them to promote Welsh farming.”
