Why are retailers involved?
Retailers have a crucial role in the supply chain, and by failing to capitalise on a strong supply of PGI Welsh lamb and putting a flagship product front and centre, farmers feel that their product is not being given a fair showing compared to imports and other protein sources.
Is there more they could do?
The simple answer is yes; some retailers have a fantastic record on Welsh / British lamb at this time of year, such as Morrisons, Aldi, Waitrose and Budgens, who source 100% Welsh/British lamb. Others source less or haven’t created the farmer producer groups that some retailers have worked hard to build.
What share of the retail price does the farmer receive?
Last year, the farmer received 58% of the price that the consumer pays; this year they receive just 44% (on average).
Are there other factors?
On price, yes, factors such as exchange rate and market availability impact the price farmers receive. These are out of the control of farmers and consumers, however.
What can I do to help?
Consumers can help by looking for the PGI Welsh Lamb logo on lamb, and asking about the provenance of their lamb – PGI Welsh lamb is at its very best, and produced to world leading standards, so we would like consumer to vote with their wallets and support Welsh sheep farmers.
