Since April 2022, it has been mandatory for VAT registered businesses to comply with the requirements of MTD, regardless of the size of their turnover.
The Absolute Excel VAT Filer is bridging software that allows you to submit your VAT data in the correct digital format to HMRC. It is easy to use and doesn’t require buying a new bookkeeping package, saving you time and money by not having to learn a new accounting system.
The Excel VAT Filer works with standalone spreadsheets or spreadsheets exported from non-Making Tax Digital (MTD) accounting packages.
The software is recognised by HMRC as MTD compatible and comes with free online technical support from the Absolute team. HMRC has confirmed that using spreadsheets with MTD compatible bridging software will continue to be an effective ongoing option for taxpayers to comply with MTD.
Not only does the software let you file your VAT returns direct to HMRC’s MTD portal it also:
- enables you to fix VAT returns that HMRC has rejected;
- lets you check current and previously filed VAT returns;
- allows you to reprint successful submissions;
- keeps you up to date with your licences and their expiry dates; and
- has many more features to help make filing VAT returns as easy as possible.
Further information on how the Absolute Excel VAT Filer can help you can be found here, and a video below shows how the software works.

Coming soon – MTD for Income Tax and Self AssessmentThe next stage in HMRC’s MTD plan is the implementation of MTD for Income Tax and Self Assessment (MTD for ITSA). This had been due to come into effect from 2023, was moved back to 2024, but is now expected to take effect from 2026. The new rules will apply to self-employed individuals and property landlords with an annual income of £50,000 or more. From April 2026, they will have to send quarterly submissions to HMRC, using MTD compatible software which details their income and expenditure. They must also submit an End of Period Statement highlighting any adjustments and allowances before submitting a Final Declaration and paying any due tax. Individual taxpayers with a gross income between £30,000 - £50,000 will be required to join the scheme from April 2027. HMRC is reviewing the situation regarding partnerships and those with an annual income below £30,000. This is a significant change compared to the current annual Self Assessment filing process. Based on the huge success of our Excel VAT Filer product, Absolute is now developing a similar bridging software solution that will help individuals to comply with MTD for ITSA. If you would like to be kept informed of MTD for ITSA announcements and the development of this product, please email [email protected]. Absolute has created a free guide to MTD for ITSA, which provides more detail about the forthcoming changes, who will be affected and what steps you will need to take.
